The Los Angeles County coroner’s office scheduled an autopsy to determine what killed the mother of hip-hop star Kanye West, a coroner’s investigator said Monday.

Preliminary information suggested that Donda West died from “complications of surgery,” Lt. Fred Corral said. An autopsy was expected by Wednesday.

It was unclear what she might have had surgery for, but a plastic surgeon said Monday that West had approached him months ago about having cosmetic surgery. He said he never performed the procedure because he was worried about a preexisting condition.

West, 58, died Saturday night at Centinela Freeman Regional Medical Center in Marina del Rey after she stopped breathing at her home, said Deborah Ettinger, a hospital vice president. She was taken to the hospital by paramedics, and hospital staff attempted to revive her.

West did not have surgery at Centinela Freeman, Ettinger said. It was not immediately clear where West might have undergone surgery.

The Kanye West Foundation referred calls to a publicist, who did not immediately respond to messages for comment.
