Honoring the scare givers
Here’s one awards show where Helen Mirren and Tom Hanks had no shot at a sweep of the honors: Spike TV’s Scream 2007, which honored gore fests and comic books over period pieces and dramas. 1. Rob Zombie, left, Slash and Alice Cooper rocked out at the wild affair, which kicked off with fake entrails exploding into the crowd. “It’s not your mama’s award show!” Harrison Ford aptly said as he picked up his Hero Award at the Greek Theatre on Oct. 19. While a 2. ghoulish winged creature swooped in to snatch an audience member, there was also plenty of pretty to go around with 3. Megan Fox snagging Sci Fi Siren honors and Rosario Dawson presenting her “Grindhouse” directors, 4. Quentin Tarantino, left, and Robert Rodriguez, with a pair of weapon-like statues.

Award humor -- some present, some receive
No, 5. Richard Gere isn’t running for office. He was just imitating his wife’s thumbs-up gesture after he told the audience at the Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Awards on Monday that he would keep his acceptance speech short and sweet. 6. John Travolta expanded on Gere’s gesture while picking up his statue for best supporting actor, and 7. Brad Pitt gave his “Assassination of Jesse James” costar Casey Affleck the hands, joking that he thought he was presenting to Affleck’s older bro, Ben. Also yukking it up: 8. Will Ferrell, who did his James Lipton impression before presenting an award to his “Stranger Than Fiction” director, Marc Forster. A fittingly well-coiffed 9. Janet Jackson presented the Ensemble of the Year award to the cast of “Hairspray.”

Strong voices on behalf of a cause
Head-turner 10. Catherine Zeta-Jones, with husband Michael Douglas, wowed the crowd at the “A Fine Romance” musical benefit Oct. 20 with more than just her forest-green Reem Acra dress. The host showed off her award-winning talents by welcoming the crowd with -- what else? -- “Willkommen” from “Cabaret” and closing the show with “Nowadays” from “Chicago,” which she and Chita Rivera performed with top hats and canes. 11. Jennifer Hudson also gave the crowd a repeat of an Oscar-winning performance with “And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going.” A hirsute 12. Hugh Jackman represented the music men as co-host at the affair, which raised money for the Motion Picture & Television Fund, an organization that provides health and social services to people in the entertainment industry.
