* Baltimore 9, at Boston 8: Nick Markakis hit a three-run homer to help the Orioles end a nine-game losing streak, while the Red Sox lost starter Tim Wakefield even before the game started. Wakefield, tied for the major league lead with 16 wins, was scratched from his start because of a sore lower back and replaced by Julian Tavarez. After holding the Orioles to two hits in three scoreless innings, he yielded four runs in the fourth.

* Tampa Bay 9, at New York 1: Carlos Pena homered twice and Andy Sonnanstine pitched eight innings of two-hit ball for the Devil Rays. The Yankees were trying to move a season-high 17 games over .500. Joba Chamberlain, the Yankees’ rookie right-hander, was suspended for two games and fined $1,000, a day after he threw consecutive 98 and 99 mph pitches over the head of Boston’s Kevin Youkilis.

* at Cleveland 8, Chicago 5: Casey Blake’s three-run double capped a six-run eighth inning as the Indians, who trailed, 5-0, in the sixth, extended their winning streak to a season-high seven. The White Sox have lost 10 consecutive road games for the first time since 1977.

* at Toronto 7, Seattle 5: The slumping Mariners lost their seventh in a row -- matching their season-worst skid. Former Angel Jarrod Washburn lost for the fifth time in six August starts. Shaun Marcum won for the eighth time in 10 starts.

* at Oakland 5, Detroit 4 (10 innings): Dan Johnson lined the game-winning single to right with none out in the 10th, and the A’s dropped the Tigers a season-high 5 1/2 games back in the Central Division.

* Kansas City 9-0, at Minnesota 4-5: Scott Baker came within three outs of a perfect game and two outs of a no-hitter in the second game. He walked John Buck on a 3-and-1 pitch to lose the perfect game. Pinch-hitter Mike Sweeney blooped a single to left-center. In the opener, Ross Gload homered and drove in three runs for the Royals.
