They’re a heck of a lot more attractive than a FEMA trailer, and now they are available nationwide. Home-improvement retailer Lowe’s is offering blueprints for so-called Katrina Cottages online.

Formerly available in stores only in Mississippi and Louisiana, the diminutive cottages, purported to be a cozier alternative to the almost universally disdained trailers offered as a short-term housing solution after Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast in August 2005, now are touted as second homes or guesthouses.

The store is selling the plans on its website, www.lowes.com, in 11 styles from 544 square feet to 1,800 square feet. They retail for $700.
