* at No. 9 Virginia Tech 17, East Carolina 7: Victor Harris returned an interception 17 yards for a touchdown with just over three minutes left in the first half to give the Hokies the lead for good in what was an emotional opener at Blacksburg. Virginia Tech was playing its first game since 32 students and faculty were killed on campus in April. Otherwise, Virginia Tech’s running game struggled and quarterback Sean Glennon had a pass intercepted, lost a fumble and was sacked four times by the Pirates, who entered as 27 1/2 -point underdogs.

* at Boston College 38, Wake Forest 28: Matt Ryan threw for five touchdowns and DeJuan Tribble intercepted three passes to help the Eagles defeat the Demon Deacons and give Jeff Jagodzinski a victory in his head coaching debut and conference opener. Ryan completed 32 of 52 passes for a career-high 408 yards. Kenneth Moore tied a Wake Forest record with 15 catches for 126 yards and a touchdown.

* at Miami 31, Marshall 3: Javarris James ran for two touchdowns, Tavares Gooden and Calais Campbell had interceptions to set up easy scoring drives, and the Hurricanes recorded six sacks in Coach Randy Shannon’s debut.

* Central Florida 25, at North Carolina State 23: Kevin Smith rushed for 217 yards with two touchdowns, and the Knights held on at Raleigh to spoil Coach Tom O’Brien’s debut.

* at North Carolina 37, James Madison 14: First-time starter T.J. Yates threw three touchdown passes to lead the Tar Heels at Chapel Hill in the debut of Coach Butch Davis.

* Connecticut 45, at Duke 14: Tyler Lorenzen threw for 298 yards and two touchdowns as the Huskies pulled away in the second half at Durham, N.C., to hand the Blue Devils their 21st consecutive loss.

* at Wyoming 23, Virginia 3: Devin Moore rushed for 125 yards and a touchdown, and the Cowboys held the Cavaliers to 110 total yards at Laramie.

* at Maryland 31, Villanova 14: Keon Lattimore ran for 106 yards and three touchdowns to lead the Terrapins at College Park.
