Bruins, Dodgers in blue funk

Something tells me that this week’s Viewpoint will not feature letters from UCLA fans telling everyone how much more impressive their team looked than USC, as we saw after Week 1.

To call UCLA’s performance on Saturday disgraceful is an insult to disgraceful performances. I have seen better performances from delusional “American Idol” wannabes. Even Notre Dame thinks that UCLA’s satirical skit was an eyesore.

I keep waiting for that moment when Dan Guerrero points with pride at Karl Dorrell and says, “You’re doing a heckuva job, Karl.”

All of a sudden, Notre Dame-UCLA looks like a good matchup.

The bad news is that the UCLA football team is not very good this year. The good news is that they are being televised on a channel that nobody gets.

This UCLA team’s personality is a total reflection of its coach -- asleep at game time. Wake up, Mr. Athletic Director, and find a coach who is not comatose.

A recent ad in The Times gives the telephone number to order UCLA football tickets as 310/UCLA-WIN.

Unfortunately, no one answers.

Much was expected of the Bruins this season, with 20 returning starters. Of course that is 20 returning starters from a team that went 7-6. I have tried to hope for the best for Karl Dorrell because I want the best for the Bruins. However, we have losses against teams that we should not be losing to. You can never reach great heights when you can’t get out of your own way.

The good news? Basketball practice starts in four weeks.

Hey Ben, thanks for coming back to visit us in Utah last Saturday with your teammates. Unbeknownst to many, we play a little football here now and then, so it was nice to get reacquainted. Come again when you’re vertical and check out the scenery. It’s a pretty nice place to see when you’re not on your back.

Is there any chance that Ben Olson will take another two-year mission?
