Would-be bomber gets 2 life terms
An Iraqi doctor who planted car bombs in the heart of London and tried to mount a fiery attack on a Scottish airport will spend at least 32 years in prison, a judge announced Wednesday.
Judge Colin Mackay handed down two concurrent life sentences to Bilal Abdulla, convicted a day earlier of conspiracy to commit murder.
Abdulla, 29, who was born in Britain but raised mostly in Iraq, and Kafeel Ahmed tried to detonate several car bombs in London on June 29, 2007. After that failed, they drove to Scotland and rammed a Jeep packed with cans of gasoline into a terminal at Glasgow’s international airport.
The vehicle burst into flames but did not explode, and both men were arrested. Ahmed suffered severe burns when he set himself on fire at the scene, and he died of his injuries a few weeks later.
