Man is held in DUI; child injured
A 22-year-old Mission Viejo man was arrested on suspicion of driving while intoxicated, and his 11-month-old child was hospitalized in critical condition after their pickup hit a parked dump truck. The child was not secured in a car seat, authorities said Wednesday.
The accident occurred about 6 p.m. Tuesday when the Nissan pickup truck carrying the man, the toddler and two other adults slammed into the dump truck near Mustang Run and Aguilar Street in Mission Viejo, according to Lt. Fred Furey of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.
Authorities are investigating whether the father was negligent in not providing a car seat as required by law. “We’re looking into where the child was placed, possibly in an adult’s lap,” Furey said.
