Warner to cut 3 dozen workers

Warner Bros. issued layoff notices Wednesday to about three dozen employees at its Burbank studio, citing the effect of the 2-month-old strike by Hollywood writers.

The studio said last week that it had sent out written notice to more than 1,000 workers in its facilities division, advising them that they could potentially lose their jobs.

A studio spokeswoman said Wednesday that those warnings had been misinterpreted by some media outlets, which reported that 1,000 people would be laid off.

“There was a great deal of misinformation reported regarding the potential number of layoffs that might be implemented this week,” the company said in a prepared statement.

“We have worked very hard to come up with solutions -- such as implementing reduced work schedules -- to minimize layoffs. Because of these measures, fewer than three dozen positions were affected this week.”

The spokeswoman declined to say whether there could be more layoffs in the future, but she said the company would “continue to explore alternatives to layoffs, including deployment to other areas of our businesses.”

Warner’s studio facilities division currently employs about 1,400 people. The number can more than double at the height of production.

The facilities department is made up largely of production support workers in the areas of electrical, set lighting, post-production and catering.
