Stanford spoils it for the Sun Devils

Brook Lopez scored every point during a 10-0 second-half run, and Stanford handed No. 22 Arizona State its first Pacific 10 Conference defeat with a 67-52 victory Saturday night at Palo Alto.

With Jeff Pendergraph on the bench in foul trouble, the Sun Devils (14-3 overall, 4-1 Pac-10) had no answer for Lopez in the paint and saw the 7-footer almost single-handedly end their 10-game winning streak -- not to mention the chance for them to move into first place in the conference.

Lopez finished with 19 points and a career-high 16 rebounds, taking over the game after two free throws by James Harden gave the Sun Devils a 42-40 lead with 8:48 remaining.

“I had to get back in the game. I was playing soft and Pendergraph was getting the better of me,” Lopez said. “I had to attack the glass and get more physical.”

Anthony Goods added 14 points for Stanford (15-3, 4-2), which fell out of the rankings last week after a loss at Oregon on Jan. 13.

Harden scored 16 points and fellow standout freshman Ty Abbott added 12 for the Sun Devils (14-3, 4-1), who were trying for sole possession of first place after fourth-ranked UCLA lost earlier in the day to USC, 72-63.

Arizona State was in the top 25 for the first time since ending the 1994-95 season ranked 16th but couldn’t pull off the difficult Bay Area sweep.

It was the team’s second-lowest scoring output of the season behind a 62-47 loss at Nebraska on Dec. 2.

Arizona 79, California 75 -- Jerryd Bayless scored 24 points and made four free throws over the final nine seconds as the Wildcats rallied late to beat the Bears at Berkeley.

Chase Budinger had 21 points and Nic Wise added 15 for the Wildcats (12-6, 2-3), who were off to their worst conference start in 25 years before coming from behind to beat the Bears (11-6, 2-4) for the 17th time in the last 19 meetings.

California out-shot and outrebounded Arizona, but the Wildcats made a season-high 11 three-pointers, four each from Budinger and Wise.

It was Arizona’s work at the free-throw line and its defense that made the biggest difference down the stretch, though.

The Wildcats made eight of nine during the final 48 seconds and held the Bears to one basket during a five-minute stretch after falling behind, 64-58, with 6:21 left.

Ryan Anderson scored 30 points for Cal, which lost for the fourth time in five games.

Washington 83, Oregon State 74 -- Jon Brockman scored 26 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for the Huskies at Seattle. It was his 12th double-double of the season, which leads the Pac-10.

Brockman factored into every point of a 9-2 run that took Washington (11-7, 2-3 from 65-64 down with 3:11 left to 73-67 up with 1:16 to play.

After Brockman converted a three-point play at the 1:47 mark for a 71-67 Washington lead, he stole the ball in the backcourt and fed Venoy Overton for a driving layup, increasing the lead to 73-67 with 1:16 left.

The Beavers (6-12, 0-6) have lost eight in a row, their last win coming Dec. 19 in a nonconference game against Northern Colorado.
