Change requires a step at a time
Re “Chicken run,” Opinion, July 5
I agree with Julia Olmstead that battery cage confinement is cruel and inhumane, which is why I’m voting yes on Proposition 2.
However, it seemed to me Olmstead should consider the history of social justice movements and the step-by-step approach needed to make substantial changes. Two centuries spanned the successes of the abolitionist and civil rights movements. Olmstead would like change to happen overnight, but that’s not the way meaningful social change occurs.
Proposition 2 -- which will ban the inhumane practice of keeping farm animals in tiny cages where they can barely move -- is a step in the right direction, addressing a small part of an admittedly very big problem.
