Fox to parade Hall of Famers

The dog days of summer are here. The baseball pennant races, unlike the weather, haven’t heated up yet. Golf is missing Tiger Woods. The Tour de France doesn’t end until July 27.

But just around the corner, on Tuesday, is the 79th baseball All-Star game. Even if the game isn’t an epic, the show on Fox should be memorable.

For one thing, it will include a parade -- and doesn’t everyone love a parade? Also, the game takes place in one of the grandest cathedrals in sports, Yankee Stadium, which will be torn down after the season.

It all begins at 4 p.m. Tuesday with tape-delayed red-carpet coverage. The parade, which takes place earlier in the day in Manhattan, will feature some of the biggest names in baseball history plus the current All-Stars. Among the more than 50 Hall of Famers riding will be Tom Lasorda and former Dodgers Don Sutton and Eddie Murray. The parade is expected to attract nearly a million people.

Game coverage with Joe Buck and Tim McCarver begins at 5 p.m., but because of all the introductions, the first pitch isn’t scheduled until 5:43.

Baseball, Arizona at Philadelphia, Saturday, 12:45 p.m., Channel 11. Randy Johnson (5-7) is scheduled to pitch for the Diamondbacks. Matt Vasgersian and Mark Grace announce.

Golf, John Deere Classic, today, noon, the Golf Channel, Saturday and Sunday, noon, Channel 2; American Century Classic, today, 4 p.m., taped, ESPN2; Saturday, 1 p.m., and Sunday, noon, Channel 4. The celebrity golf on NBC this weekend from Lake Tahoe may be a bigger draw than the PGA Tour event on CBS. One attraction will be Jessica Simpson, there to root on boyfriend Tony Romo. At the 2007 Lake Tahoe event, Charles Barkley pledged $100,000 to aid victims of that year’s Northern California wildfires. It took a while for him write the check, but he paid that debt before he paid his $400,000 tab at Las Vegas’ Wynn Casino.

Beach volleyball, AVP Crocs Tour Chicago, men’s final, Saturday, 11:30 a.m., women’s final, Sunday, 10:30 a.m., Channel 4. Misty May-Treanor is going for an unprecedented 100th career victory; and if she and her partner Kerri Walsh win it will be a record-setting 16th consecutive tournament title.

Horse racing, Man o’ War Stakes, Saturday, 2:15 p.m., ESPNews; NTRA Summer Series, Delaware Handicap, Sunday, 2 p.m., ESPN2. The big race of the weekend is Curlin in Belmont Park’s Man o’ War. The winner of the Delaware, a $1-million test for fillies and mares, gets an automatic berth in the $2-million Breeders’ Cup Ladies Classic at Santa Anita on Oct. 24.

Boxing, Wladimir Klitschko vs. Tony Thompson, Saturday, 1:30 p.m. (repeats, 10 p.m.), HBO. This fight at Hamburg, Germany, is a mandatory title defense for Klitschko (50-3, 44 knockouts).

Baseball, Home Run Derby, Monday, 5 p.m., ESPN. This is ESPN’s 11th consecutive year of live coverage and 16th consecutive year overall. The Derby is usually one of the highest-rated programs of the summer on ESPN. KSPN and XM will provide radio coverage of this event as well.

“Amazing Sports Stories,” Sunday, 8:30 p.m., FSN West. Ben Malcolmson, whose story is a combination of “Rudy” and “Paper Lion,” is featured. In 2006, Malcolmson was a USC student and reporter for the Daily Trojan who, despite having not played tackle football since the fifth grade, made the USC football team as a walk-on. After coming back from shoulder surgery, he got into that season’s game against Notre Dame.

“Costas Now,” Wednesday, 9 p.m., HBO. The state of baseball will be discussed. Angels owner Arte Moreno and Dave Winfield are on one of the four live panels. Hank Aaron, Willie Mays and Frank Robinson are on another. Among those appearing in taped segments will be Commissioner Bud Selig, Mike Schmidt, Al Kaline and Bob Gibson.
