Judge Steven Reinhardt, the leading liberal on the U.S. 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, suffered shortness of breath on a flight to Washington on Wednesday, forcing the plane to divert to Las Vegas where the judge was hospitalized for dehydration, a court spokeswoman said.

Cathy Catterson, executive of the court, said oxygen was administered aboard the plane, and a doctor who was onboard assisted Reinhardt.

“There was concern,” she said. “It turned out that he was dehydrated.”

She said Reinhardt’s family traveled to Las Vegas on Wednesday to be with him.

The judge, 77, a President Carter appointee, is expected to be released today, the spokeswoman said.
