Wiggins passes Leslie’s Pac-10 scoring record
PULLMAN, Wash. -- Stanford senior Candice Wiggins became the Pacific 10 Conference women’s career scoring leader Sunday in a 74-52 victory over Washington State.
Wiggins passed Lisa Leslie’s record of 2,414 points -- set at USC from 1991 to 1994 -- late in the first half and ended up with 24 points to move into the top spot with 2,424. The victory also gave the Cardinal the Pac-10 regular-season title.
“I’m really happy for lots of reasons,” said Wiggins. “The regular season’s done and just seeing how far we’ve come is very exciting. Obviously this feat that I’ve accomplished has been kind of looming for a while, and I’m very proud.”
Wiggins passed Leslie’s record on a baseline drive with 1:25 to play before halftime and was fouled in the process. After Wiggins converted the free throw, play was stopped to honor her.
“That’s a tremendous accomplishment and it could not happen to a better person, a better basketball player, a better leader,” Stanford Coach Tara VanDerveer said. “I’ve never coached anyone that I’ve enjoyed more than working with Candice. I’m very happy for her and very proud of her.”
