Rockets and peace

Re “U.S. envoy presses Israelis, Palestinians on peace plan,” March 15

While The Times seems to blame inaction on the absence of Israeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Israel’s home building in Jerusalem and the West Bank, and assertions that Barak may be planning further assaults on Palestine, there’s no mention of the thousands of Katyusha rockets raining down on cities and villages over the years and continuing today. The Times’ policy of fairness is sorely tested.

What unrealistic fantasy causes the Bush administration to waste its collective breath on requesting Israelis and Palestinians move forward with a peace plan? It is clear to me that the Palestinians want peace. But Israel? Israel has not wanted peace in the past, does not want it now and will not want it in the future. In the midst of peace negotiations, Israel decides to build new homes in East Jerusalem. Israel by its actions proves over and over that it wants land, not peace.

When Israel finally gets all of the West Bank, it will have shot itself in the foot because a two-state solution will be impossible.
