I’m not sure if this is a tip or a warning, but Thursday nights in April at downtown L.A.’s Redwood it’s Ye Be Warned Night, with boozy people wearing eye patches and bandannas and dancing the peg-leg two-step -- or is that one-step? The Charles Pirate Band plays fiddle-intense shanties and, no, they don’t want to hear your Jack Sparrow imitation. . . . Want to get famous as a singer? I suggest you find religion and go to the LAX Radisson at 9 a.m. Saturday for Gospel Dream 2008, the third annual talent search by the Gospel Music Channel. Don’t assume it’s an amateur affair: GMC now has 40 million viewers and was described by the Wall Street Journal as “the fastest-growing enterprise on cable.” Hallelujah! . . . Exciting news: My life story is going on stage in the musical “The Smartest Man in the World” at the Pico Playhouse. Well, actually, no, it’s about some dude named Albert Einstein. I guess the title is relative. Starts tonight, ends May 11 ([323] 860-6620). . . . Our date in L.A. history: Marc Davis, one of Disney’s greatest artists, was born 95 years ago Saturday in dusty Bakersfield. He died in Glendale in 2000 after a truly animated life: He designed and animated Aurora from “Sleeping Beauty,” Tinker Bell and Cruella De Vil, which shows the man understood women a lot better than some of us. To celebrate, get the tradition-loving “Enchanted,” just out on DVD.
