* Chicago 4, at Boston 2: Jim Thome tied Mickey Mantle for 14th place with his 536th home run, Gavin Floyd (15-6) won his fifth consecutive decision and the White Sox avoided a three-game sweep. Thome hit a two-out, two-run drive against Tim Wakefield (8-9) in the first inning for his 29th home run this season. Boston’s Dustin Pedroia singled in the first inning for his ninth consecutive hit, reaching safely in 11 consecutive plate appearances.

* at Tampa Bay 10, Baltimore 4: James Shields (12-8) gave up six hits and one run over seven innings to match his career high for wins, set last year, and the Rays completed a three-game sweep. Jason Bartlett had four hits, including a home run during a two-run seventh inning that made it 10-1. It was his first home run since Aug. 27, 2007.

* Minnesota 12, at Oakland 4: Justin Morneau hit a home run and drove in four runs, Scott Baker (8-4) won for only the second time since the All-Star break and the Twins earned a split of the four-game series. Baker gave up a run-scoring double to Jack Hannahan but kept the A’s quiet otherwise, scattering six hits over six innings to improve to 3-0 in three career starts against Oakland.

* Toronto 6, at New York 2: Roy Halladay (17-9) won his fourth consecutive start, giving up only home runs to Alex Rodriguez and Jason Giambi, and the Blue Jays won two of three in the series. Halladay improved to 4-1 with a 2.50 earned-run average in five starts against the Yankees this year.

* Seattle 6, at Cleveland 4: Adrian Beltre hit two home runs and the Mariners completed a sweep of the three-game series. Beltre’s third multi-homer game this year and 19th of his career helped the Mariners win for the seventh time in nine games.

* at Detroit 4, Kansas City 2: Miguel Cabrera hit a home run and drove in four runs, and the Royals’ Jose Guillen hit a home run. Kansas City has lost 12 of 14.

* Texas 4, at Angels 3: Josh Hamilton and Marlon Byrd hit home runs and the Rangers avoided being swept in the four-game series.
