at Chicago 4, Kansas City 2: Jim Thome of the White Sox hit a three-run home run in the eighth inning in a season opener delayed a day because of bad weather. Thome’s 542nd career homer erased a solid outing by the Royals’ Gil Meche, who pitched seven strong innings.
at Toronto 5, Detroit 4: Rod Barajas hit a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning to cap a Blue Jays rally. Scott Rolen hit a solo homer and Aaron Hill had a three-run drive for Toronto, which trailed, 3-0, after seven innings.
at Minnesota 6, Seattle 5: Alexi Casilla’s two-run single capped the Twins’ three-run rally with two out in the ninth inning. Endy Chavez and Adrian Beltre each drove in two runs for the Mariners. Michael Cuddyer had two RBIs for the Twins, who trailed 4-0 after four innings.
Oakland 6, at Angels 4: The Athletics broke a 3-3 tie with two runs in the seventh inning off reliever Kevin Jepsen and got an insurance run off Darren Oliver in the eighth.
