A woman in her 40s was killed in a drive-by shooting Saturday in South-Central Los Angeles, though she did not appear to be the prime target, police said Sunday.

The woman, who has not been identified, was walking near the intersection of 46th Street and Central Avenue about 5:30 p.m. Saturday when two people in a dark-colored car drove near her and someone inside began shooting, police said. The woman was hit in the torso and died at a hospital, police said.

“The victim was probably not the intended target,” Los Angeles Police Deputy Chief Sergio Diaz said of the apparently gang-related shooting.

“She appeared to be a local transient,” Diaz said.
