La Pastorela
When, where: Today, El Presidio de Santa Bárbara State Historic Park
Highlights: A retelling of the story of the shepherds’ (pastores) journey to Bethlehem to witness Christ’s birth. This annual Spanish-language performance in the presidio’s chapel includes song and historic dances.
Cost: $10; $5 for children ages 11 and younger and for Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation members

SAN FRANCISCO
Beach Blanket Babylon holiday shows
When, where: Through Dec. 31, Club Fugazi, North Beach
Highlights: America’s longest-running musical revue puts on holiday-themed performances that include a chorus line of tap-dancing Christmas trees.

TUCSON
New Year’s Competition Pow-Wow
When, where: Dec. 31 to Jan. 3, Rillito Raceway Park
Highlights: This annual event brings together Native American dancers from more than 50 tribes and offers handmade crafts, traditional foods, drum contests and kids’ activities. As 2009 turns into 2010, the Midnight Friendship Round Dance welcomes the new year.
Cost: $9 (free for kids ages 8 and younger, Native Americans dressed in regalia and military service members)

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ.
Scottsdale Fantasy of Lights
When, where: Through Jan. 2, WestWorld
Highlights: Drive through this attraction filled with huge animated displays, music and lots and lots of lights.
Cost: $15 per car ($12 on Monday and Tuesday)
VANCOUVER, CANADA
Bright Nights
When, where: Through Jan. 2, Stanley Park
Highlights: A holiday train wends through the light-bedazzled park, forest and farmyard. Kids enjoy holiday treats and a visit with Santa in the train station.
Cost: Admission to the plaza is free, but train and farmyard tickets are $8; $5 for children ages 2 to 18 and seniors 65 and older.
