A 23-year-old man was sentenced Monday to 20 years to life in prison for the May 2007 beating death of a professional surfer in La Jolla.
Seth Cravens was convicted of second-degree murder and assault with a deadly weapon in the death of Emery Kauanui, 24, after a brawl that started with an argument at a bar.
Four other men involved in the assault on Kauanui pleaded guilty to lesser charges and received sentences in September, ranging from three months to nearly a year in jail. Cravens was the only defendant to go to trial. All five defendants were former football players at La Jolla High School.
Before being sentenced by San Diego County Superior Court Judge John Einhorn, Cravens turned to Kauanui’s family and apologized.
