Arizona State prevails

Jeff Pendergraph scored 15 points, all in the second half, and No. 24-ranked Arizona State defeated Oregon State, 49-38, on Saturday at Corvallis, Ore.

The Sun Devils (18-5, 7-4 in Pacific 10 Conference play) won their fourth consecutive conference road game, their longest streak since winning five games in a row in 1980-81.

Rickey Claitt had 13 points and was the only player in double figures for the Beavers (10-12, 4-7), who shot only 32% from the field.

The Sun Devils did not fare much better, shooting 38%.

Oregon State Coach Craig Robinson said the Beavers were focused going into the game on guard James Harden, who led the Sun Devils with an average of 21 points per game. Harden finished with only nine points against the Beavers.

The Beavers, who did not win a Pac-10 game last season, had a four-game winning streak end Thursday with a 56-53 loss to Arizona.

Arizona State was coming off a 66-57 victory at Oregon.

Pendergraph went on a personal 12-point scoring run to put the Sun Devils ahead, 38-27, midway through the second half.

The Sun Devils have won four games in a row against the Beavers and the last four games in Corvallis.

Arizona 87, Oregon 77 -- Junior forward Chase Budinger scored 25 points, junior forward Jordan Hill had 24 and the Wildcats used a strong second half to win at Eugene, Ore.

The victory clinched the first road sweep this season for the Wildcats, who were 0-6 in road games before beating Oregon State on Thursday.

Arizona (16-8, 6-5) took control with a 20-4 run for a 65-47 lead with 10 minutes 50 seconds to play. Junior guard Nic Wise, who had 17 points, began the run with a three-point basket and a running jumper in the lane, and Hill capped the run with a one-handed dunk.

Hill scored 15 points in the second half, including the 1,000th point of his career.

Junior guard Tajuan Porter scored 21 points, including two free throws to give the Ducks (6-17, 0-11) their last lead, 29-28, with 3:29 left in the first half.

Arizona shot 55.6% (30 for 54) from the field, including 11 for 20 from three-point range.

Oregon got 18 points from freshman Drew Wiley, who made five of nine three-point shots.

The Ducks matched their worst start in conference play since 1992-93 and must win at Washington State on Thursday to avoid their longest losing streak since the 1956-57 season, when they lost 13 in a row.

California 71, Washington State 63 -- Patrick Christopher scored 20 points, Jerome Randle had 20 and the host Golden Bears (18-6, 7-4) swept the season series from the Cougars (12-11, 4-7).

Taylor Rochestie scored 19 points and made four three-point baskets for the Cougars, who have lost 10 of 16.

Randle made two free throws and made a no-look pass to Theo Robertson for another score as the Golden Bears scored seven consecutive points, finishing with an 11-3 run.

Robertson made four three-pointers and finished with 17 points.

Cal’s top three scorers accounted for 11 three-pointers and all but 14 of the team’s points.

The Golden Bears completed their first four-game sweep of the Washington schools since 2003.
