The attack on movie critic Ben Lyons by Chris Lee was so vicious [“Dumbing Down the Film Critic,” Dec. 28]. It is shocking that it got past your editors and made it into print. What was Lee’s motive and what is his vendetta? I have worked as a TV sports anchor, Major League Baseball TV play-by-play announcer and am about to begin my 28th year as radio play-by-play announcer for the Boston Red Sox. I have seen some very harsh reviews of people in sports but nothing even close to Lee’s assault on Lyons.

I have known Ben Lyons since his childhood and have watched his career develop. He is a man of great integrity and intelligence and his appearance adds to his television appeal, no matter what Mr. Lee may think. Ben has grown up in the entertainment industry. He is the grandson of syndicated columnist Leonard Lyons and the son of entertainment critic Jeffrey Lyons, host of his own syndicated movie review show, “Reel Talk.” Ben has certainly acquired a deep understanding of the movie industry, and with his background is anything but awe-struck by movie stars.

Lyons has made a quick ascent in television undoubtedly because research has proven his appeal to today’s generation of moviegoers. No TV executive would entrust a talent with a role like “At The Movies” because of nepotism.
