Bombing kills 2 in capital of Colombia
BOGOTA, COLOMBIA — A bomb exploded in an exclusive neighborhood here Tuesday, killing two people, authorities said.
Police and emergency workers cordoned off the area near a Blockbuster video store and an upscale restaurant after the strong explosion rattled the northern part of the capital.
“Unfortunately, two people were killed,” Interior Minister Fabio Valencia told reporters at the scene.
Several more people were reportedly injured.
Bombings have been rare in Bogota since President Alvaro Uribe began a U.S.-backed crackdown on the leftist rebels who have been fighting a four-decade war against the government.
Police did not immediately blame any group for the explosion. But in the past they have blamed small bombings of commercial establishments on Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia rebels trying to extort money from businesses.
