Frommer’s world too wide for some

Arthur Frommer says our embargo on Cuba is “farcical” [“The Wide World of Arthur Frommer,” by Susan Spano, July 12]. What is really farcical is his liberal double standard. Don’t go to Burma [Myanmar] or Libya, but by all means go to Cuba and China.

After all, left-wing tyrants are much more preferable than right-wing ones. I wonder if Frommer’s guide on Cuba points out the jails where political prisoners are rotting, or advises visitors not to speak disapprovingly of the Castro brothers because they may see their vacation cut short.

Frommer may know a lot about travel, but he reveals his ignorance of Cuba when he advocates travel to Castro’s gulag. He should inform himself about the human rights violations that take place in Cuba before being so cavalier with his opinion.

I agreed with Frommer’s comments about “first-class hotels offering the imaginary experience of living like an aristocrat.”

When staying in snob-appeal hotels, you return to the room just in time to sleep. What a price to pay! Frommer said it so well: “The less you spend, the more you enjoy.”
