Re “A lesson in Senate hearings,” Column, July 18

Sandy Banks’ statement, “I only wish as much attention had been paid to Sonia Sotomayor’s preceding sentence: ‘There can never be a universal definition of wise,’ ” is an excellent summation of the matter.

I am reminded of Marcel Proust’s words: “The universe is true for all of us and different for each of us.”

Your column reminded me of the many cloaked statements made to me in the business and academia worlds, which through years of experience I steeled myself against and brushed off. Thanks for an insightful column.
