Southern Section Division III preliminary track meet
Top contributors: La Puente Bishop Amat’s Sheldon Price won his 100-meter heat at the Southern Section Division III preliminary track meet with a wind-aided time of 10.60 seconds. Los Angeles Cathedral’s Randall Carroll ran the 100 in 10.65, edging teammate Kevin Ally’s time of 10.67.
The scoop: Cathedral Coach Roosevelt Ivory said Carroll “jogged” his 100 to guard against injury and expending too much energy before next Saturday’s divisional finals at Cerritos College. “We kind of pulled in the reins a little bit to make sure he qualified and stayed healthy,” Ivory said.
Why it matters: Carroll didn’t log the fastest time in preliminaries last year and went on to win state titles in the 100 and 200. “You win your heat, you qualify,” Ivory said. “That’s the whole purpose of this meet.”
