Courts that work
Re “Courts to close 1 day a month,” May 20
The one-day-a-month closure of courtrooms is a ruse to justify increasing the court budget. There are any number of creative ways to cut costs without shuttering the courthouse one day each month. Many judges run extremely inefficient courtrooms. Recently, I was required to drive 30 miles round-trip to appear at a hearing. I waited most of the morning to hear a ruling that could have been posted. As some judges already do, all should be required to post early tentative rulings on the court website. This would avoid some unnecessary trips to the courthouse.

If the courts would put in an honest eight- or nine-hour day, they would easily get their work done and could close down a few days of the month without any impact.
