Jacobs homers twice in final

Westchester’s baseball team was delayed taking the field for Saturday’s City Section Division II final at Dodger Stadium because Manny Ramirez was conducting a private workout, but senior shortstop Chris Jacobs upstaged Ramirez with a pair of three-run home runs in the Comets’ 11-1 five-inning mercy-rule victory over North Hills Monroe.

He’s the second player in City Section history to hit two home runs at Dodger Stadium in a single game. John Dolak of Palisades did it in 1985. Jacobs came close to having a third home run, hitting a double off the wall in right field in his first at-bat. He followed with a three-run home run into the left-field bullpen in the second, a flyout in the fourth and a walk-off three-run homer down the left-field line in the fifth.

“I think it was an unbelievable performance,” Westchester Coach Seka Edwards said. “To play at that level on this stage is what dreams are made of for a senior.”

The 5-foot-9 Jacobs played junior varsity last season after transferring from Covina. He batted .500 with nine home runs during the regular season.

“It’s very special,” he said of his accomplishment.
