Buffalo Bills offensive coordinator Turk Schonert has been fired after the offense’s dismal performance in the preseason.

The move was announced by Coach Dick Jauron on Friday, less than a day after the Bills (1-4) closed their preseason with a 17-6 loss to Detroit. Quarterbacks coach Alex Van Pelt will take over as the Bills prepare to open the season at New England on Sept. 14.

Minnesota Vikings quarterback Brett Favre was fined $10,000 by the NFL for his crack-back block on Houston defensive back Eugene Wilson in an exhibition game. The play happened on Monday night at Houston in Favre’s first extensive action since he signed with the Vikings on Aug. 18.

The New England Patriots trimmed their quarterbacks to two on the depth chart by releasing Andrew Walter, leaving undrafted rookie quarterback Brian Hoyer as Tom Brady’s only backup, at least for now.

Friday’s games

at San Diego 26, San Francisco 7: Chargers Coach Norv Turner called for an onside kick to open the game, with Antoine Cason recovering to set up Billy Volek’s 39-yard touchdown pass to Kassim Osgood.

Houston 27, at Tampa Bay 20: Rex Grossman threw two touchdown passes and also produced a pair of field goals for the Texans, possibly earning a backup job behind Matt Schaub and Dan Orlovsky.

Dallas 35, at Minnesota 31: Tarvaris Jackson played well but attempted only four passes, and Sage Rosenfels threw an ugly interception in the loss to the Cowboys.

Injury report

Saints tight end Billy Miller said he tore his right Achilles’ tendon during New Orleans’ final exhibition Thursday against Miami, probably ending his 10th season before it started.

Chicago Bears running back Kevin Jones will sit out the season after tearing ligaments in his left ankle in the exhibition finale Thursday against the Cleveland Browns.
