Cameron Beckman wins Mayakoba Golf Classic

Cameron Beckman won the Mayakoba Golf Classic for his third PGA Tour title, closing with a three-under-par 67 for a two-stroke victory over third-round leader Joe Durant and Brian Stuard at Playa del Carmen, Mexico.

The 40-year-old Beckman, three strokes behind Durant at the start of play Sunday, finished at 15-under 269 on the Mayakoba Resort’s El Camaleon course.

Bernhard Langer knocked in a bunker shot for eagle on the first playoff hole to beat John Cook for the Allianz Championship title at Boca Raton, Fla.

Langer and Cook were tied at 17-under 199 when they headed to a sudden-death playoff on No. 18. Cook missed an eagle chance when his putt rolled past the hole on the Old Course at Broken Sound.

Langer and Cook each shot a five-under 67 in the final round.

Ai Miyazato of Japan rallied to win the season-opening Honda PTT LPGA Thailand, holing a 30-foot birdie chip on the final hole for a nine-under 63 and a one-stroke victory over Suzann Pettersen of Norway.

Pettersen finished with a 70 on Siam Country Club’s Old Course.

PGA Tour Commissioner Tim Finchem took the blame for not alerting his players about why Tiger Woods chose to make his first public appearance during the Match Play Championship.

Players had to field several questions about Woods upon finishing their matches in the opening round Wednesday, when it was announced that Woods was to speak publicly Friday for the first time since the Nov. 27 car accident that revealed rampant affairs.

Finchem, who allowed Woods to use the TPC Sawgrass clubhouse at PGA Tour headquarters for the nationally televised event, knew that Woods was on a break from therapy and was to return Saturday.

Querrey wins Memphis event

Sam Querrey rallied in the second tiebreaker and took advantage of a faltering John Isner in the third set, winning the Morgan Keegan Championships, 6-7 (3), 7-6 (5), 6-3, at Memphis, Tenn.

It was the tallest finals matchup in ATP history -- Isner is 6 feet 9, Querrey 6-6.

Roger Federer withdrew from the Dubai Championships, which starts Monday, because of a lung infection.

A four-time winner in Dubai, Federer will rest for two weeks and is expected to return at Indian Wells in March.

Holland is off Oregon’s team

Oregon football Coach Chip Kelly announced that wide receiver Jamere Holland was dismissed from the program for violating team rules. Kelly didn’t specify which rules were violated.

Holland attended Woodland Hills Taft High and transferred to Oregon from USC.

The dismissal follows a weekend citation for another Oregon football player, Kristian Kiko Alonso. The 19-year-old linebacker was cited early Saturday with investigation of driving under the influence of intoxicants.

Alonso is the fourth Oregon football player to get into legal trouble in less than a month.

A woman died after being hit by a tire from a crashing dragster at the NHRA Arizona Nationals in Chandler.

The woman was watching a first-round top-fuel run at Firebird International Raceway when Antron Brown’s Matco Tools/U.S. Army dragster went out of control on the strip and its left rear wheel came off.

The woman’s name and hometown were not immediately available.

Final eliminations were postponed until Monday because of rain.
