Brush fire briefly threatens Hacienda Heights homes

Firefighters were mopping up a brush fire Tuesday evening that forced 32 Hacienda Heights residents in 15 homes to be evacuated as flames raced up a dry hillside, officials said.

More than 100 firefighters knocked down the flames north of Colima Road about 6:45 p.m., the Los Angeles County Fire Department said.

Four camp crews cut breaks along the flanks of the blaze. The ground crews were being aided by three water-dropping helicopters, the department said.

Fire officials initially said that six homes and about a dozen residents had been evacuated but revised those figures upward after they brought the blaze under control, said Capt. Frank Reynoso. Residents were waiting to return to their homes Tuesday evening.

The fire broke out shortly before 6 p.m. and burned three acres of dry vegetation in the hills near Colima and Halliburton roads. The cause was under investigation.
