Report: Rangers acquire Bengie Molina
The Texas Rangers have acquired catcher Bengie Molina from the San Francisco Giants in exchange for reliever Chris Ray and a player to be named, a source told MLB.com on Wednesday.
Rangers General Manager Jon Daniels would not confirm the trade when talking to reporters Wednesday.
The Giants, through a team spokesperson, said they had no comment.
Marlins retain Rodriguez
A day after being told he would manage the team for the rest of the season, Edwin Rodriguez watched the Florida Marlins lose to the New York Mets, 6-5, in the final game of a three-game series in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Rodriguez, who was born on the island, had replaced the fired Fredi Gonzalez on an interim basis while the Marlins pursued managerial candidates, including former major league manager Bobby Valentine.
But after the possibility of hiring Valentine fell through, team owner Jeffrey Loria decided to keep Rodriguez, who was the manager at triple-A New Orleans, on the job until at least the end of the season.
La Russa supports Arizona law
St. Louis Cardinals Manager Tony La Russa says he supports Arizona legislation calling for tougher enforcement against illegal immigrants.
Opponents of the law have called for Major League Baseball to move the 2011 All-Star game out of Phoenix.
La Russa says Arizona has a problem that the national government has failed to remedy. The manager, who lives in Northern California, spoke this week before a game in St. Louis between the Cardinals and Arizona Diamondbacks.
Reilly heads All-Star umpires
Mike Reilly, in his 34th season as a major league umpire, will serve as crew chief and work behind the plate at the All-Star game July 13 at Angel Stadium. It will be his fourth All-Star game.
Also on the crew are Mike Winters at first base, Brian O’Nora at second base, Laz Diaz at third base, Bruce Dreckman on the left-field line and Jim Wolf on the right-field line.
It will be the first All-Star game for Wolf, the brother of Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Randy Wolf.
