Overrated / underrated

“The T.A.M.I. Show”: Previously available only at special screenings, this fantastic 1964 concert film comes to DVD on Tuesday. Besides seeing the Supremes, Chuck Berry and the Beach Boys in their prime, you can witness the moment when pop culture spun off its axis with James Brown’s incendiary performance and wonder (as we do) why the Rolling Stones ever agreed to follow him.

Brad Mehldau’s “Largo”: Now that the pianist’s new, orchestra-polished collaboration with Jon Brion, “Highway Rider,” is in stores, it’s time to reevaluate the forward-looking mix of jazz, rock and electronics that came out of the pair’s 2002 collaboration. Dismissed by some jazz purists after its release, the album, with its wild, eclectic vision, deserves to be appreciated for what it is: pure genius.

“Moscow, Belgium”: There was a lot to like in this uniquely European romantic comedy, particularly Barbara Sarafian’s torn and frayed single mother, but we’re still left wondering how it landed on so many year-end lists. True love wins in the end, as it should, but when the choice was between a recovering drunk with abusive tendencies and a smug philanderer, is there really a winner here?

Charlotte Gainsbourg’s vocals: With a unique look, lyrics about a near-death experience and impeccable genes (she’s the daughter of Serge Gainsbourg), this indie fave has a lot going for her in transitioning from acting to singing. But for all of Beck’s arresting touches on her album “IRM,” we wish Gainsbourg’s voice offered more than detached whispers and flat speak-singing.
