ART

Pop L.A.: Art and the City in the 1960s Author and UC Irvine art history professor Cecile Whiting will discuss how artists such as David Hockney, Claes Oldenburg, Ed Ruscha and Judy Chicago helped shape Los Angeles as an emerging art center. Whiting delves into artworks inspired by the city as well as its natural environment. Huntington Library, 1151 Oxford Road. 7:30 p.m. Free. (626) 405-2100. www.huntington.org.

Sing Your Heart Out (It’s Karaoke) Art and karaoke collide in this installation by Jason Underhill. It replicates a traditional karaoke setup, with a small stage, a microphone, two screens and a catalog of singalong music videos. The twist is that the performer’s monitor displays song lyrics, but the audience’s screen shows incongruous (and occasionally embarrassing) narratives written by Underhill. Mandrake, 2692 S. La Cienega Blvd., L.A. 6 p.m. Free. (310) 837-3297. www.mandrakebar.com.

For the record: An earlier version of this article listed the Fowler Museum event below as happening March 22, but it is actually happening May 22.

Soundsuits Under the Stars Nick Cave (no, not that one) is an artist who makes deliriously colorful “sound suits,” installation pieces that exist in a nebulous space between sculpture, performance art and gnarly acid trip. At this free after-hours event, they’ll only seem more magical. Fowler Museum, UCLA. May 22, 8-11 p.m. Free. www.fowler.ucla.edu.

POP MUSIC

The Infamous Stringdusters The sprawling ensemble epitomizes the ethic of today’s young “new-grass” artists. Their instrumental virtuosity is front and center, but it’s paired with an insouciant curiosity for everything from shiny Nashville harmonies to jam-band wonkery. Largo at the Coronet, 366 N. La Cienega Blvd., L.A. 8 p.m. $25. www.largola.com.
