USC defeats LMU in water polo semifinal
SAN DIEGO -- Second-seeded USC ended Loyola Marymount’s bid for an NCAA championship in women’s water polo, defeating the Lions, 10-6, in a semifinal Saturday at San Diego State’s Aztec Aquaplex.
The Trojans will face top-seeded Stanford in the final at 5 p.m. Sunday. The Cardinal defeated archrival California, 6-3, in the other semifinal.
Loyola Marymount upset UCLA, 5-4, on Friday for one of the biggest victories in the history of the program. The Lions will now play Cal in the third-place game at 3 p.m. Sunday.
UCLA rebounded from Friday’s loss by defeating Marist, 14-3, in a losers bracket match and will now play Michigan for fifth place at 1:35 p.m.
Marist will play in the seventh-place match against Pomona-Pitzer at noon.
