Westchester wins City Section Division II championship
Seka Edwards, the baseball coach at Westchester, could get used to playing his home games at Dodger Stadium.
“I would love it,” he said.
His players certainly are making it a habit of hitting home runs there. Last season, Chris Jacobs hit two home runs in the City Section Division II final. And on Saturday, junior Josh Gilder hit a two-run home run over the left-field wall to highlight the Comets’ 10-3 victory over Venice in the Division II championship game.
“It’s an amazing feeling,” Gilder said.
Westchester’s baseball team, trying to distinguish itself from the Comets’ state championship boys’ basketball team, had only two seniors on the roster, and it’s expected that the Comets (22-8) will move to Division I next season when the City Section revises its playoff divisions based on past performance. And two consecutive Division II titles should be enough to get the Comets promoted.
“We look forward to seeing how good we are,” Edwards said.
Junior left-hander Jamaal Moore threw a complete game, striking out five and giving up six hits. Andrew Carter had two hits and three runs batted in, and Kenny Peoples-Walls had three hits.
Venice (19-12) fell behind, 6-0, to its Western League rivals and could never catch up.
Junior Campos had a single and double for the Gondoliers.
