Trevor Gretzky’s football days might be over because of shoulder injury

The football career of Westlake Village Oaks Christian quarterback Trevor Gretzky might be over.

Gretzky, who hasn’t played since the third game of the season against Calabasas because of a partially torn labrum in his throwing shoulder, continues to have pain, Coach Bill Redell said.

“I’m beginning to think he won’t come back,” Redell said. “The shoulder is not healing as fast as anticipated.”

Gretzky is also a top baseball player who has committed to San Diego State, so getting him healthy for the baseball season is important.

Richie Harrington has replaced Gretzky as Oaks Christian’s quarterback and has done a solid job for the Lions, who are 5-2 overall and 5-1 in the Marmonte League.

Stop or go

Corona Centennial (7-0) has been close to unstoppable this season, but the Huskies’ defense figures to be severely tested on Friday against Norco (6-1) and standout running back Kelsey Young.

“He’s a great running back, one of the best we’ve ever seen,” Centennial Coach Matt Logan said.

Centennial has plenty of incentive for the game, because Norco beat the Huskies, 29-28, last season on senior night.

With only three weeks left in the regular season, the weekly Southern Section polls take on increasing importance because they help provide clues to playoff seedings.

In the Pac-5 Division, Mission Viejo (7-0) is No. 1, followed by No. 2 Anaheim Servite (7-0), No. 3 La Puente Bishop Amat (8-0), No. 4 Mission Hills Alemany (7-0), No. 5 Santa Margarita (6-1), No. 6 Long Beach Poly (5-2), No. 7 Lakewood (7-1) and No. 8 Mater Dei (5-2).

There will be changes in the final weeks because Bishop Amat and Alemany face off in a regular-season finale; Mater Dei and Servite play on Friday, and Santa Margarita still has games left against Servite and Mater Dei.

So look for Long Beach Poly to move up if several teams suffer defeats, because the Jackrabbits have already played and beaten their toughest league opponent, Lakewood.

Moving on

West Hills Chaminade has six baseball players who have made their college decisions. Letter of intent day is Nov. 10.

Among the players committed are pitcher Mathew Troupe (Oregon State), pitcher Dalton Brown (Duke), second baseman Tanner Reibenspies (San Diego State), outfielder Michael Dingilian (San Luis Obispo), catcher Jason D’Andrea (Cal State Dominguez Hills) and outfielder Brandon Rapoport (Washington).

“It shows our baseball program is on the upswing,” Coach Frank Mutz said.
