Boston College hits paydirt in the Southland

There’s something strange happening in Lakerland.

A team from Boston appears to be luring top high school basketball players from Southern California back east.

Boston College and its new coach, Steve Donahue, who used to be at Cornell, on Monday got commitments from 6-foot-8 Ryan Anderson of Long Beach Poly and guard Lonnie Jackson of Valencia. Earlier, Boston College landed another promising player from the region, 6-11 center K.C. Caudill from Brea Olinda, who announced his choice in August.

“I’m the ultimate Laker fan, but this is business and life,” Jackson’s father, Lance, said. “It’s a good California story. They’re all friends.”

With Anderson and Jackson joining Caudill in leaving the West Coast for the East Coast and Atlantic Coast Conference basketball, that’s a big coup for Boston College. All three are excellent players and top students.

Woodland Hills Taft point guard Spencer Dinwiddie is being recruited by Colorado, Oregon, Harvard and Nevada Las Vegas, among others.

The first day of the early letter of intent period for high school senior basketball players is Nov. 10.

Eubank getting better

With each game, Corona Centennial quarterback Michael Eubank shows improvement, and that’s scary for opponents.

He rushed for 180 yards and passed for 200 yards last week against Santa Ana Mater Dei. He’s averaging 14.5 yards per carry. He’s a 6-5, 232-pound senior who plays as strong as he looks.

Scoring at will

There are people wondering whether the defensive coordinators took a day off Saturday when Palos Verdes Chadwick and North Hills L.A. Baptist combined for 18 touchdowns in a 68-59 victory for Chadwick.

According to the L.A. Daily News, Chadwick had 606 yards and L.A. Baptist had 460. Chadwick’s Hank Trumbull passed for 337 yards and five touchdowns.
