Golden Globes: Minimalism is the winner in red carpet fashions
The best-dressed celebrities at Sunday’s Golden Globes got the message that simpler is almost always better when it comes to red carpet dressing. Simple also happens to be what’s new in fashion now, with “minimalism” being the watchword for the last two runway seasons.
Claire Danes was the big red-carpet winner in a neon pink silk halter gown by designer Francisco Costa for Calvin Klein. Costa also designed Emma Stone’s cap-sleeved, open-back, nectar-colored silk crepe gown, which was so simple, sleek and confident that it made much of the rest of the night’s apparel look overdone and duded-up. (Consider Christina Aguilera in that beaded mess of a Zuhair Murad dress and Leighton Meester in that nude print and ruched Burberry that her “Gossip Girl” character, Blair Waldorf, wouldn’t touch with a 10-foot pole.)
Tilda Swinton, always ahead of the fashion curve, rocked a simple crisp white shirt and yellow-satin ball skirt from the blockbuster Jil Sander runway collection that defined the spring season. It looked chic and comfortable.
Emerald green was a popular color — Elisabeth Moss, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Mila Kunis all wore it. But Angelina Jolie’s long-sleeved, sparkly emerald-green Versace was the best of the bunch, stunning in its simplicity.
We also saw a lot of neutral — Eva Mendes in a black stretch wool Zac Posen, Dianna Agron in a soft beige chiffon J. Mendel and Olivia Wilde in an embroidered chocolate brown Marchesa confection were the most notable. Nicole Kidman’s cream sequined Prada column with a tiny bow at the waist was also charming, though the fabric was not forgiving.
Hailee Steinfeld’s cream ruched Prabal Gurung gown was understated — and age-appropriate, worn with a sleek ponytail and minimal jewelry. The 14-year-old “True Grit” star was a big “get” for Gurung, one of New York’s rising fashion stars.
Steinfeld is one to watch style-wise. She has been making some sophisticated fashion choices recently. She wore Chloe to the AFI awards and Marchesa to the Critics’ Choice Awards. Wish I’d had those clothes when I was her age.
