Fast-food breakfast wars: Burger King adds Whopper to morning menu

Burger King thinks nothing says breakfast like a big cheeseburger.
The Miami-based fast-food chain is launching a new “Burgers at Breakfast” menu that will offer a variety of burgers and sandwiches previously not included as early-morning options.
The new breakfast offerings include Whoppers, double cheeseburgers and chicken sandwiches, Burger King said in a statement. About 5,000 locations have said yes to the program, the company said.
The menu will allow “guests to start their day being their way,” Burger King said, “either with the great flame-broiled taste of our signature burgers and sandwiches or with our delicious suite of breakfast offerings.”
Burger King’s move comes as fast-food chains vie furiously for morning customers with options that extend beyond pancakes and coffee.
Earlier this year, Taco Bell rolled out a new breakfast menu with ads featuring guys named Ronald McDonald who just happened to love the Irvine-based chain’s morning foods. The new menu includes a waffle taco, which is a waffle shell stuffed with eggs, cheese and either sausage or bacon. Instead of hot sauce, customers get a side of syrup to layer on top.
McDonald’s, long a mainstay of the grab-and-go breakfast market with its Egg McMuffin and other options, handed out free cups of coffee during breakfast hours last month.
