Target sells $999 mockingjay pin to mark ‘Hunger Games’ DVD release
Katniss Everdeen gets her golden mockingjay pin as a gift in “The Hunger Games,” but fans will have to shell out $999 to score a replica of the token on Target’s website.
The retailer, in a partnership with the Lionsgate studio, is making 100 of the 14-carat pins that it is selling in conjunction with the DVD and Blu-ray release of the “Hunger Games” film.
Seems like an expensive way to commemorate a hardscrabble character from an impoverished district?
Target is also offering 100 leather “Katniss” hunting jackets for $349 each. Fans can also scramble for 100 lithograph posters signed by stars such as Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson and priced at $699 each.
The jacket and the poster will be available online beginning Aug. 18. The pin will be available online Aug. 20. The $20.99 DVD and the $25.99 Blu-ray hit shelves on Aug. 18, though they are already available for pre-order.
The film is based on the hit young adult novels of the same name. In the story, mockingjays are hybrid birds that become a symbol of rebellion.
For those with less to spend on movie memorabilia, Target will also feature products in the $6.99 to $37.99 range, including backpacks, lunch boxes, jewelry, pillowcases and more based on “The Hunger Games.” Also: lifesize cardboard cut-outs of Katniss and fellow characters Peeta Mellark and Gale Hawthorne.
