Johnny Bench prices Rancho Mirage home at $1.195 million
Johnny Bench of Big Red Machine fame has put his lakefront home in Rancho Mirage on the market for $1.195 million.
Set off a cul-de-sac, the desert dwelling rests on nearly half an acre in the guard-gated Mission Hills Country Club area with lake and fairway views of the Pete Dye-designed golf course. Designed for outdoor entertaining, the grounds include a pool and spa, a putting green and a batting cage. A covered pavilion adds an outdoor fireplace, barbecue and wet bar.
An open floor plan of nearly 3,600 square feet features arched doorways, a chef’s kitchen with a large center island, an office, four bedrooms and 4.5 bathrooms. The living room sports exposed beams and a large stone fireplace.
A golf cart is also included with the property, listing details note.
Considered one of the greatest catchers to ever play the game, Bench totaled 10 Gold Glove Awards, 14 All-Star appearances and two World Series titles in 17 seasons with the Cincinnati Reds. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1989, his first year eligible, appearing on more than 96% of the ballots.
The baseball great and his wife, Lauren, paid $1.395 million for the home in 2006, according to Celebrity Address Aerial. Susan Winters of Windermere Real Estate is the listing agent.
The couple also maintains a residence in Naples, Fla., that they purchased in 2012 for $2.55 million.
Bench’s listing comes after former Reds teammate Pete Rose parted ways with his longtime home in Sherman Oaks. The half-acre property, offered for as much as $2.15 million in 2013, went for $1.96 million in late August.
