A Long Beach Fire Department truck responding to an emergency call fatally struck a 61-year-old man lying in front of the station’s doors early Tuesday morning, authorities said.

The incident occurred at 12:30 a.m. outside Fire Station 8 in the 5300 block of 2nd Street in Belmont Shore, according to Jake Heflin, a spokesman for the Fire Department. Authorities said the man was lying in front of the roll-up door to the fire station when the engine exited.

Heflin said that firefighters rendered aid to the man but that he was pronounced dead at the scene.
