Artists Baldessari, Kruger, Opie return to MOCA board
The Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles announced Tuesday that three of the four artists who resigned from the museum’s board in July 2012 over concerns about the direction of the institution will rejoin it.
John Baldessari, Barbara Kruger and Catherine Opie will resume their positions as “artist trustees” on the MOCA board. Ed Ruscha, a former trustee who also resigned, will not return; he joined the board of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art in August. Instead, Mark Grotjahn will become the fourth artist on MOCA’s board.
In addition, Kathi Cypres, who served a three-year term that ended in June 2012, and Steven F. Roth, another former board member, were elected to the board again. Maria Seferian, the lawyer who has served as MOCA’s interim director, also was elected.

The move comes just more than a week after Philippe Vergne began work as MOCA’s director, replacing Jeffrey Deitch, who resigned in July 2013. Vergne was formerly the director of Dia:Beacon in New York.
“I really believe in Philippe,” said Opie. “I was part of the search committee, and it seems natural at this point after such an extensive search that I come back to serve and support him as well as the other board members.”
