Unlike #OscarsSoWhite, the Tony Awards are diverse

Earlier this year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced an all-white slate of acting nominees -- for the second year in a row. Immediately, #OscarsSoWhite started to trend. But don’t expect that at the Tonys, where a number of productions champion diversity. Take a look at some of the ceremony’s diverse representation:

  • 14 individual nominees are actors of color, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Lupita Nyong’o and Sophie Okonedo.
  • “Eclipsed,” which is nominated for best play, is the first to be written and performed exclusively by black women.
  • “Hamilton,” known for its diverse cast and hip-hop influence, is nominated for 16 Tonys. It has the chance to beat the record for most wins in one night.
