Happy Hours: Komida, Mohawk Bend, Deck 33

We would not ordinarily send you to Hollywood & Highland — except on a dare — but Komida is doing interesting things with its Japanese spin on L.A. taco fare. The bustling outpost (in the unlamented former H.Wood space) of the popular Farmers Market staple Yamashiro Grill has a daily 5-7 p.m. deal for $3 short rib tacos, $2 chicken satay tacos and $15 buckets of either four Singha beers, a carafe of jamaica-champagne cocktails or white lychee sangria. You might need some new pants after indulging, and we hear you can take care of that at the complex as well. Komida, 1738 N. Orange Drive, Hollywood, (323) 466-5124.

The Echo Park leviathan Mohawk Bend was an inevitable success from the start, and overwhelming in its scope. Tony Yanow’s place probably quintupled the number of craft beers that are on tap at your old hangout and offers a dizzying array of vegan pizzas and other food. Thus, the lines out the door any hour of the day. So it’s a welcome gesture that they’ve installed Mohawk Mondays, where after 5 p.m. they proffer all-you-can eat pizzas (vegan and non-) and $4 beer specials for those low-key types who want a very good reason to go big. So, things got gnarly at LAX and you’re grounded for the afternoon. The newly renovated Custom Hotel by the airport revives the ‘60s mod days when flying wasn’t an endless spiral in Dante-esque oblivion, and its restaurant Deck 33 is a perfect place to drink off the carnival of pain and depression that is holiday travel. From 5 to 7 p.m. daily, pretty much everything — bar snacks, cocktails, draft beer and house wine — is $5, which is a good bit less than what you’ll pay in the terminal. Added bonus — no shrieking children or TSA groping. Deck 33, 8639 Lincoln Blvd., L.A., (310) 258-5706.
