Animated films dominate box office, but ‘Brave’ is No. 1 [Video]

Animated 3-D family fare was in demand at the box office this weekend, where”Brave”and”Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted”each sold a healthy number of tickets.
“Brave” scored another No. 1 debut for Walt Disney Studios’ Pixar animation unit, opening with a strong $66.7 million. The runner-up was also a cartoon, “Madagascar 3,” which raked in an additional $20 million in its third weekend of release, raising its overall domestic total to $157.4 million.
But two new films that hit theaters didn’t attract as many moviegoers to theaters. The 3-D historical thriller”Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter”only grossed a lackluster $16.5 million, while the dramedy”Seeking a Friend for the End of the World”opened with a dismal $3.8 million.
There was better news in the indie film world, where Woody Allen’s latest film, “To Rome With Love,” got off to an excellent start in limited debut. The film scored the second-highest per-screen average of the year behind only Wes Anderson’s”Moonrise Kingdom” and could be poised to follow in the footsteps of Allen’s last hit, 2011’s”Midnight in Paris.”
