Grammys 2013: Fun. wins song of the year for ‘We Are Young’

New York City group Fun. has won the song of the year trophy for “We Are Young,” its ubiquitous celebration of youth and desire at the 55th Grammy Awards in downtown Los Angeles. The ditty, which became a singalong anthem after it was released in late 2011, hit No. 1 in the spring after prominent placements in both “Glee” and during a Chevrolet ad that aired during the 2012 Super Bowl.

Co-written by the three members of Fun. (Nate Ruess, Andrew Dost, Jack Antonoff) and producer songwriter Jeffrey Bhasker, who is best known for his work with Kanye West, “We Are Young” propelled the group to national prominence and helped it secure six nominations. Among those were nods in all four major general categories -- the first time that has happened since Amy Winehouse did it in 2007.

Fun. bested Miguel’s seductive hit “Adorn,” Ed Sheeran’s “The A Team,” Carly Rae Jepsen’s ubiquitous “Call Me Maybe” and Kelly Clarkson’s “Stronger (What Doesn’t Kill You).” Last year, the award, which honors songwriters, went to Adele and songwriter-producer Paul Epworth for “Rolling in the Deep,” their powerful anthem of rebounded love.

The Grammys are determined by about 13,000 voting members. The eligibility period for nominated recordings was Oct. 1, 2011, to Sept. 30, 2012. The awards are being held at Staples Center and telecast on CBS-TV. They are broadcast live except for viewers on the West Coast.
