Fresh look at Jimi Hendrix ‘Live at Woodstock’ set to hit theaters

A feature-length film capturing Jimi Hendrix’s extended 1969 performance at Woodstock will be screened in theaters starting later this month for the first time.

“Hendrix 70: Live at Woodstock” includes 14 performances such as his rendition of “The Star-Spangled Banner” and “Purple Haze” featured in the original “Woodstock” theatrical film, plus “Spanish Castle Magic,” “Red House” and “Lover Man” and “Izabella,” “Fire” and “Villanova Junction” as Hendrix introduced his new band, Gypsy Sun & Rainbows.

The nearly-complete performance — some portions weren’t filmed — was released on DVD in 1999, but this edition includes a new 5.1 surround-sound audio mix prepared by Hendrix’s engineer, Eddie Kramer. The original 16-mm film footage was shot by director Michael Wadleigh and the team he brought to document the celebrated three-day rock festival in upstate New York.

This presentation also includes previously unreleased footage and interviews with Hendrix band members Billy Cox and Mitch Mitchell, Kramer and Woodstock promoter Michael Lang.

Screenings start Nov. 26 and tickets and other information will be available at the official Hendrix website. In the L.A. area it will be shown Nov. 28 and Dec. 5 at the Rave 18 + IMAX theater in Los Angeles and Muvico multiplex in Thousand Oaks, and Dec. 4 at the Landmark Regent theater in Westwood.
